Well behaved women rarely make history...

Spill the Tea is a bold new musical inspired by the first recorded act of female political rebellion in American history — the Edenton Tea Party. At the heart of the story is Penelope Barker, the daring woman who organized 50 other women to sign a public resolution boycotting British goods — and sent it directly to King George III. This radical act of defiance, carried out in a time when women had no political voice, helped spark a revolution and laid the groundwork, not only for the birth of a new nation, but for women to stand up for their rights.

Blending pop, hip-hop, orchestral, and classic Broadway musical styles, Spill the Tea is filled with humor, heart, and history. With a witty script plus lavish sets and costumes, the show celebrates the power of women who refused to stay silent. The musical will debut in 2026 to celebrate 250 years of American independence!

About the illustration...

This image is a satirical cartoon published in London in 1775 titled "A Society of Patriotic Ladies, at Edenton, North Carolina.” It was designed to mock the resolution the women created. Look for it in the show!
